What’s an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner?
Our Community
Commissioners represent single-member districts, which typically include around 2,000 residents.
Our community is located in ANC 1A10 in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. It is almost completely residential, dotted with the distinct rowhouses on Harvard, Girard Streets and Columbia Road that Columbia Heights is known for. Notable buildings in our area include the Carlos Rosario School, which serves immigrants and adults who are pursuing more education and Harriet Tubman Elementary School
11th Street is the busiest thoroughfare in ANC 1A10 and cuts through the entirety of this single-member district.
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners are your nonpartisan and local voice to the DC Council and District agencies on issues like public safety, streets, zoning, and sanitation services. By law, DC agencies must give great weight to ANC recommendations on a diverse set of issues.
Here are a few ways I’ve used the ANC to advocate for our community:
Trash Services: Successfully advocated for the DC Council to add more money in the budget for the Department of Public Works so residents receive more consistent trash and recycling services.
Public Safety: Organized a Public Safety Summit with Metropolitan Police Department, the Department of Behavioral Health, and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement so residents could ask them directly about their strategy to lower crime.
Lead Free DC: Worked with DC Water to identify buildings in our community that may lead pipes and notify residents of government programs to remove and replace them.
This position is the most direct way for the DC government to hear your vision for DC. It matters and I'll make the most of it for you and our community.
